This post is part one of a five-part series about “Setting a Theme for the New Year.”
At the end of each year, do you make lengthy lists of New Year’s resolutions only to find that you abandon that list in February? This can create a cycle of guilt and shame that follows you year after year. So stop using resolutions. Instead, pick a theme for each year. A theme is all about embracing joy and being more intentional with each year of your life.
The Year of Creativity – You have a good job that you enjoy. But you aren’t feeling fulfilled, and you can’t pinpoint why. Maybe your life is missing creativity. It isn’t that you want a different job – you just need more imagination in your life. So have The Year of Creativity. Choose a new hobby (or two) that allows you the space you need to create.
The Year of Yes – Do you usually say no to opportunities, like doing something fun or new? Perhaps you need The Year of Yes. Start saying yes to new and different opportunities. Journal your experiences along the way. You might even be able to write a book about it!
The Year of Self-Care – Have you spent years putting yourself on the back burner? Don’t wait for a serious health scare to make you take a hard look at your priorities. So devote yourself to The Year of Self-Care. Hire a counselor to tackle your diet or exercise or ask a friend to help you update your wardrobe.
There are so many different ways to set a theme for the New Year. Your theme could be about what you want to add (like creativity) or what you want to remove (like stress or emotional eating). Remember, there’s no right or wrong theme. Pick one that speaks to you and lean into it!
Check back next week for the first step to choosing your New Year’s theme.
