Content is king when it comes to online marketing. But content has always been king – even before online marketing existed. Previously it was with TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, in-person events, advertisements, brochures, and more.
People truly are insatiable for more information. Now you need to produce more content, and this can get quite expensive and overwhelming. But following these tips will help you get more bang for your content marketing buck.
Know your audience – All marketing begins and ends with your audience. The better you know them through research, interaction, and engagement, the more you can create content that will appeal to them.
Create goals – Every piece of content that you push out to your audience should have a purpose. It may be to spread awareness, to build credibility, to grow your email list, or some other goal. But you need to create your goals before even planning your content.
Create a publication calendar – After you know your goals, it’s time to create a publication calendar. Your calendar should include the content you want to publish, the date you want to publish it, and the places where you will publish it.
Repurpose everything – Do you repurpose your content? If not, you should! A blog post can become a video, a video can become a small report, and multiple pieces of content covering one topic can be combined to make one package or even a membership website.
Refresh old content – Depending on your niche, it may be possible to rewrite and refresh old content, making it new again. This is especially true in technology areas where things change very fast. When something changes in your industry, spend time updating old content then remarket it.
Push visitors to your email lists – The ultimate goal of content is to sell your products and services. But to do so, you’ll need to push your visitors on social media networks, websites, and blogs to sign up for your email lists. Once you get someone on your list, your chances of selling to them increase dramatically over traditional marketing methods.
Finally, it’s important that you don’t just publish content without promoting it. Content needs to be promoted to be successful, and ironically you will use content to promote content. That’s why content is king.
