Small businesses need to be focused on marketing at all times. Even if you have a full client roster or you think you have enough customers, you must keep marketing. But marketing doesn’t just consist of banner ads and direct mailings. It’s so much more. If you’re stuck on using the same old marketing ideas, take a look at how you can make your marketing better with these five strategies:
Develop your elevator pitch – When people ask you what you do, you should be able to explain your business in a succinct way that invites more questions. You never know where you’ll meet your next client – in an elevator, in line at the grocery store, in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, or at your kids’ sporting events. Follow this simple formula to create your own elevator pitch: Hi, my name is (insert your name). I help (insert your ideal customer type) get more / create more / lose more (insert your customer problem). This allows them to (insert a benefit of your services).
Get involved online and offline – Get out from behind your computer and get involved in live events. Attend meetings, business events, and conferences. Participate in telesummits, webinars, and social media events. But do it all in a proactive, involved way that advances your business goals. Before attending any event, determine which goal you will achieve by being involved in this particular activity. Then base your participation and communication at the event on reaching that goal.
Develop relationships – Finding a person to collaborate with is a great way to improve your business and find new ways to market it. By creating short-term joint ventures with individuals and companies that market complementary products and services to the same audience, you can expand your reach exponentially. Take care as you form these alliances. Establish goals for each venture to align with your overall marketing goals.
Write a book – You know a lot about your niche or another particular subject that you can share with others. Writing a book and getting it self-published is a relatively simple process. All it takes is time. It’s not likely that book sales alone will produce much income. But a book used as a marketing tool can help increase your net worth substantially.
Speak in public – Once you’ve written a book, you can leverage it to engage in public speaking events. Find events that attract your target audience and speak there to tell them your story. At first you may need to do some events free, and later you can make some money out of public speaking if you desire to go in that direction. If not, presenting yourself as a local expert can be a great marketing strategy.
Being creative in marketing means stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something different than you are currently doing. If you’re not doing something new every quarter when it comes to marketing, you’re not trying hard enough.
