Negativity can discourage us, add to our stress, make us less productive, and reduce our overall happiness. Positivity, on the other hand, offers many benefits throughout our lives. So how do you become more positive? Here are four key steps to help you develop a more positive mindset:
Keep a thought journal – Write down the thoughts you say in your own mind about yourself, events, people around you, and other things that happen throughout your day. Then read the journal every night to discover your thought patterns. Do certain events trigger your negative thoughts? The next time you are faced with a similar triggering situation, think more carefully about how you approach it.
Banish negative self-talk – After a few weeks, when you write a negative thought in your thought journal, try to rephrase it so it becomes a neutral statement. For example, “Bob forgot to contact that vendor about our problem, so I had to do it and it ruined my day” could become “Bob forgot to contact the vendor. I did it.” This is a small but effective way to train yourself. After writing in your journal for a few days, start rephrasing your negative thoughts in your mind into neutral ones.
See the positive side – By banishing negative self-talk, you now can see the positive in different situations. Refer back to your thought journal and examine your negative thoughts. Try to think of at least one positive of that thing. For example, if you dislike a client because he or she speaks unkindly to you, think about how the situation is helping you develop more resilience and a “thicker skin.” It can be challenging to find benefits within difficult circumstances, but there is always a way to see something good.
Keep a gratitude journal – Every evening write down all of the things in your day that you are grateful for. Then when you find yourself being negative or critical, open the journal and read the positive things in your life that make you feel grateful. This is a surefire way to give you perspective and make you realize how insignificant that particular trigger may be in the larger scheme of things.
Taking these four simple steps will help you transform the way you perceive the world around you. Positive perception has the power to change your life, improving your attitude and the way you respond to stress triggers. Be patient and keep working at improving your positivity!
